George’s presentation was very clear, super informative, and very thought provoking.
He outlined the evolution and adoption of new technology platforms in laboratory medicine and pathology by splitting up this gigantic topic into four parts: convergence, computing, complexity and culture. Under convergence he described that multiOmics approaches and fully automated decision systems alongside regulatory changes (e.g., SaMD) have far reaching consequences including education and reimbursement. Under computation the range of big data (size and complexity) has to be mirrored by good machine learning processes and novel regulatory paradigms. He also outlined a series of fundamental questions in the application of ML/AI in biomedical research. The complexity we currently face is largely based on data integration. Pathology will move towards more quantitative realms and robust inter-connect ecosystems. The cultural barriers George mentioned span from misaligned incentives to the creation of creative disruptive innovation. As a summary, George outlined that digital and molecular pathology evolves into a data-centric discipline in a larger network of healthcare data.
